FAQS: Frequently Asked Questions

Why does your school claim to be a Professional Choice?

PSB is a school run by a former dancer, but, it is important to note that it is also staffed only by professionals. As a result, we are able to give the necessary skills required to pursue a career in dance if your child so chooses.

Our aim is to develop dancers with a strong, clear classical technique with an emphasis on artistry, purity of line, and quality of movement. However, education and training are not the only important aspects of dance. Our students are always being encouraged to enjoy themselves and have fun! The identity of a dancer used to be significantly different than the needs of dancers today. Accordingly, PSB offers many dance disciplines, other than the traditional approach which is so important. This year, our students will be exposed to guest teachers and dancers in our newly established Master Class Program. These attributes distinguishes us from the rest.

My child does not want to be a professional dancer. Is your school a good choice?

Yes. Although a student may not have ambitions to dance professionally, the benefits of high quality classes are many. For example, our state-of-the-art studios and experienced teachers minimize the potential of life long injuries that can accompany bad training and poor facilities. Students are encouraged to enjoy themselves and have fun while learning in a pressure free environment.

Does your school put on shows throughout the year?

Yes. Philadelphia Studio Ballet provides students the opportunity to learn, rehearse and perform original, as well as traditional repertoire in our informal end of year Showcase.  PSB believes that students should gain as much performing experience as possible, and this production is open to all PSB students; no audition is required. Participation in the Showcase is not mandatory; however, it is strongly encouraged as students always enjoy this opportunity to get on stage.

PSB also offers serious students the opportunity to participate in high quality productions throughout the year. Our new performing company will hold annual performances of “The Nutcracker” as well as other productions using our tap, jazz, and hip-hop students. Company participation is open to all students, pre-3 and above. Audition is required.

Can I try a class without registering first?

Yes. You are more than welcome to try any class. The cost is $15.00 and may be applied toward tuition if you decide to register for class.

My child has assumed too many activities and needs to drop classes. Can we receive a refund?

No. All Tuition and associated fees are NON-refundable. Our policy makes it possible to insure you receive the highest quality dance instruction available, as we have minimum and maximum class sizes. Further, upon registration all students have a place reserved in our classes for the year and have assumed a responsibility to their fellow classmates.

What is a "Showcase Fee"? Didn't I pay this already?

The Showcase fee is due with your 4th Quarter tuition and is commonly confused with the "Costume Fee" which is due with your 2nd Quarter payment. The Showcase Fee is mainly used to help cover the high production costs of our annual performance. The Showcase fee is $60.00 and provides 4 tickets of admission. Like the Costume Fee, it applies only to students who are participating in the Showcase. Families with more than one student participating pay a Showcase Fee of $60.00 for the first student and $30.00 for each additional student. Each additional student also receives 2 tickets to the show.

The teacher handed out costumes, but my child was not given his/hers. Why not?

It is likely that your account is not current and has a Balance Due. Please call our office at 610-525-7151 to settle your account.

During periods of bad weather, how do I find out if the school is open?

In general we follow Montgomery County (Lower Merion Public Schools) for weather related school closings. You should also call the studio for updated information. The studio will also make every effort to post the information on the website; however, since we do not upload the information ourselves, we can not promise that it will be posted in a timely manner.
